Money Matters - Scholarships

The Mary K. Whitener Scholarship is awarded annually at the GFWC-NC State Arts Festival. The recipient must be a high school senior who has applied to the college or university of his or her choice with the intent to major in music with emphasis in piano. The student must be sponsored by a Federated club in good standing with GFWC-NC. This means that students interested in competing for this scholarship should contact a club in their area to find out about the process the club uses to select the student it will sponsor, including the deadline for applications. Local winners compete at the district contest which is held at the district Arts Festival, and the district winners then compete at the GFWC-NC Arts Festival. The winner receives $1,500 per year for four years, provided the progress and conduct of the recipient justify continuance of the award, and depending on the accrued interest from the invested funds of the State Whitener Scholarship Fund. The scholarship shall be paid to the educational institution to be used for music-related expenses (tuition, supplies, etc.)

The contestant must:

•  Be a graduating senior in an accredited North Carolina school.

•  Be sponsored by a Federated club in good standing.

•  Be declared the winner in the local and district contests conducted in accordance with the GFWC-NC rules, prior to competing in the state contest.

•  Not be entered in the GFWC-NC piano contest.

•  Perform one or two classical, romantic, impressionistic, or contemporary serious compositions of his or her choice, no less than eight nor more than ten minutes in performance time.

•  Perform from memory.

•  Provide three copies of the music to be performed for use by the judges.

Judging is based on talent and potential, without regard to financial need.
